  WHAT?
What! »

WHAT!

This is what I imagine I will be doing, and how I will be doing it, over the next three years:

  • Backpacking. I will carry the bare necessities on my back, aiming to stay as mobile as possible.

  • Independent travel. I don’t think any other person in the world would be compatible with me as a travel companion for three consecutive years. This is the ultimate ego-trip and a very personal challenge, and I will rarely compromise the choices my innermost essence suggests I should be making. I will not be afraid of changing my mind about anything, any time. Travelling independently does not necessarily mean travelling alone – I will no doubt meet plenty of travellers whom I may choose to accompany for a leg of my journey.

  • Overland travel. Although I will not swim across oceans or travel through war-zones, I will attempt to keep flying to an absolute minimum. I will attempt to travel as the locals do – this opens up for a feeling of authenticity, adventure, a better cultural understanding and greater contact with people. Hitchhiking will be my number one choice in the relatively few places around the world where this is a practical and reasonably safe way to travel, but I will mostly stick to buses and trains.

  • Travelling on a very tight budget. I have been told that it is virtually impossible to enjoy travelling on $25-30 per day for three years running. My aim is not to travel for a certain amount of time, but to enjoy travelling, and to travel for as long as it is enjoyable! (Thought experiment: In the previous sentence, try swapping “travelling” with “living”!) I will try to spend as little as possible, but I will not count every penny. Or cent. If sticking to my budget makes me unhappy, I will spend more and travel for a shorter period of time. I will not work to make money, but I may choose to work for the sake of working. “Exchanging favours” has a much better ring to it than “working”, methinks. I do hope to boost my budget by selling a few CD’s, though! Travelling on a tight budget has its rewards – I will not be able to buy an “easy life”, removed and shielded from the realities of the local environment. Again, this opens up for a feeling of authenticity and a greater cultural understanding.

  • Self-sufficiency. My budget is tight, and charity along the way will be most welcome. But charity is not strictly necessary, and I will expect none. I have what I need to survive, and I do not wish to be a burden to anyone. Although I will accept sponsorships from individuals, companies and organisations, I will be answerable to no one but my own sense of right and wrong.

  • In practical terms, the framework I have created for myself will guide my actions and give me focus. (But it will not be a constraint! It is a flexible framework within which freedom can be found or created, a framework that will change when I change.) Armed with a portable audio recorder, a camcorder and a smile, I will attempt to create a “global musical collaboration”, I will try to update this website on a fairly regular basis, and I aim to turn the whole thing into a documentary.
